A home is one of the most important investments we’ll ever make. Although the buying process may seem intimidating at first, I’ll provide step-by-step guidance. Before you know it, you’ll be packing up and scheduling the movers!
As your negotiator and guide, I’ll take you through the following three stages of buying:
1) Laying the Foundation
- Obtain pre-approval for a mortgage
- Evaluate neighborhoods and select a few potential locations
- More on finding your ideal neighborhood
- Identify your “must have” and “nice to have” home features
- Review listings that fit your criteria and price range
2) Let the House Hunting Begin!
- Schedule showings and visit properties
- When you least expect it – you’ll walk into the perfect home!
- Review recent sales in the area and present an initial offer
- Negotiate counteroffers as necessary; both sides agree on a price
- All parties sign contract; present earnest money
3) We’re in the Home Stretch!
Finding Your Ideal Neighborhood
- How close – or far – is it from your favorite places? Make a list of your favorite activities and stores – jogs along the lake, plays and musicals, shoe boutiques, etc. Then estimate how far you would have to travel to reach these destinations.
- What are the schools like? – Visit the Chicago Public Schools’ Web site at http://www.cps.k12.il.us/ to view profiles for the schools in your district. Even if you don’t have any children, better school districts enhance your resale value.
- Is it safe? – You can look up crime statistics for your potential neighborhood by logging on to http://www.chicagocrime.org.
- Will you make a profit? – I can help you evaluate appreciation trends in the area and find out if upcoming developments may affect your resale value in the future.
- Do you like what you see? – In addition to gathering statistics, walk around the area and see the everyday sights for yourself to make sure the neighborhood is right to you.
